Idaho to Montana

Saturday July 1, 2023
Wallace Idaho to St. Regis Montana

A tree fell in the woods today...

We started around 8am. We took the Coeur d'Alene Trail from Wallace to Mullan.
Then, we got onto I-90, which wasn't as bad as it sounds nor as bad as I thought it would be.
We headed uphill to Lookout Pass. There was a big shoulder and breaks in traffic once in a while.  To pass time while pedaling uphill, Kay and I looked for interesting trash... a piece of angle iron, a hitch extension, bolts, shoes, a pillow, a blanket, a quarter, a penny, at least a dozen water bottles filled with urine (assumably), and lots of pieces of tire treads to dodge.

Looks like someone knocked over the Welcome to Montana sign.

Sandra West (Lynn's sister in law and superb support person) took a picture of us entering into Montana.
About 5 miles downhill from Lookout Pass, there was a gravel section that we used to get onto a side road.
At Haugen Montana, we found and rode the Olympian Trail.
This trail was very pretty and much more peaceful. It followed the St. Regis river. As we went past a rock slide area, Lynn wondered aloud if we would hear anything before rocks started to fall. I said, let's not find out. Maybe 5 minutes later, we heard a loud crack, and I could see a very tall pine tree falling! Kay was ahead of us. It happened right next to her. It was uphill on our right side. I could see that it was falling parallel to us uphill, so the split second of terror went away. Once we got past where the tree fell, we stopped for a minute to let our knees quit shaking.
We made it to St. Regis, around 4pm (and moved into Mountain Time Zone).
