Deadwood

Belle Fourche to Deadwood South Dakota 

We left at 830am. It was already getting hot. We only had 26 miles to go... but all uphill! 

We stopped at the bike shop in Spearfish to get our chains checked. Turns out I need new brakes. Guess I used them all up in the mountains.

 After Spearfish we really started climbing. We had a big shoulder to ride on but there was a rumble strip about every 20 feet, and the pavement was kind of grooved. It made for a poor riding surface. At some point during the climb, my garmin showed 104 degrees. Yep, it was hot. 

On the downhill into Deadwood,  I just stayed in the right lane and got up to 32mph... not many cars passed me. We got to the Historic Franklin Hotel around 1pm. We left our bikes behind the front desk and drove back to Spearfish for the night. We'll drive back over tomorrow to hang out in Deadwood and stay at the hotel. 

We drove through Spearfish Canyon on the way back. We had thought of riding through it but decided it was too much climbing. 

 Kay and I are camping tonight at Spearfish City Campground.  It's really nice.

Tomorrow is a rest day in Deadwood (because we rode 2 routes during the giant headwind a few days ago).
