I went to Russia today

Thursday,  July 4, 2024
Lynn had arranged for Tormo (the owner of the lodge) to drive us to see the Winter War Monument near the town of Suomussalmi. He has an employee, named Aino, who speaks English, is 18, and wants to get into Hospitality Management, go with us.  She served as the guide and interpreter. After breakfast, we got into Tormo's car for the hour and half drive.
The weather was cool and cloudy with no wind.  As we were looking at the monument, the wind picked up once or twice to make the bells chime.
The museum was also very nice with a lot of information in English.
After the Winter War, there was the Continuation War.
The Russians invaded via the Raate road. The Finnish army created multiple blockades and attacked from the sides on snowskis.
My understanding was that Finland won the Winter War but still gave up some land to Russia in order to keep the peace.
Aiona recommended the book and 2017 version movie called The Unknown Soldier.
There was a section about Ukraine.
After the museum, we drove to Russia.
Of course, we did not cross the boarder!

We toured the Finnish Border Guard museum.
Our last stop was at the restored trenches and the marker for how far the Russians advanced before turning back.
For a rest day, we sure were busy! We walked to town for dinner at the Meijan Grilli. I had a chicken sandwich that was not picture worthy (ok, I forgot).
