Hill of Crosses

Wed, Jul 24, 2024
Zagare, Lithuania to Siauliai, Lithuania
miles today 52.3
miles so far 1501.1
feet climbed today 764.0
feet climbed so far 42,256.0
I accidentally saved my ride at The Hill of Crosses, so ride #2 is the 7 miles to the apartment in town.
Relive video #1    #2
Strava link #1    #2

We ate yogurt for breakfast and left around 830am.
We had altered our route based on recommendations from the neighbors across the road (that we met as we walked to dinner last night). But, garmin told me to turn too soon. It took a mile before we figured out we were on the wrong road...
so back we went to find the right road.
And we found a pastry shop in Sakyna.
Sometimes the pastry has meat in it.
After a short pastry break, we left Sakyna (20 miles from where we stayed last night) around 1130am. A man walked by me,  stopped, said hello, smiled and put his hand out to shake mine.  He must have noticed the surprise on my face because he said... "you stay... my place". It was the man we rented the beautiful house from last night in Zagare. Crazy. On we went.
We saw a swan family.
The road we were concerned about had a bike path (as the family in Zagare thought).
On our way to The Hill of Crosses, we saw several Camino stickers.
This is what Pope John Paul 2 said...
We went back to Siauliai to find our lodging for the night.
We had rented this place for 2 nights thinking we'd visit the Hill of Crosses tomorrow but did it today so we could shorten our ride for the next day. This place was $71 per night (no breakfast and no refund for the late cancelation).
We walked to dinner.
I had Thai Chicken.  It was very good and $15.
So instead of a rest day tomorrow and 70 miles the next day,  we'll ride about 40 tomorrow to another town on the route where I found a place through booking.com.

Oh yeah. Did you think I forgot to list the Latvian words that I learned while it Latvia?  I did not forget because I did not learn any.
I already know one word in Lithuanian.
Thank you = aĉiū (sounds like ah-choo)
